In 2004 Sheila Corbett and Marcel Perella of Ergonomic Workstation Solutions (EWS) conducted several ergonomic assessments and demonstrations for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Some of the assessments conducted by EWS have aided employees with no actual cost to the MBTA; whereby, recommendations as simple as raising a computer monitor or moving existing office furnishing were made to employees or department managers that has improved workers productivity and morale. In some instances, it was found that by adding something as simple as a keyboard tray, roller mouse or an appropriate chair was the key to resolving the ergonomic complaints of our employees.
By conducting an onsite assessment and product demonstration, EWS identified several appropriate ergonomic task chairs for the MBTA's Subway Operations Department. Collectors who had applied for an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations were allowed to test chairs in their Subway work environment. As a result, the MBTA is now able to provide ergonomic model specific chairs, which meet the needs of the majority of our Collectors.
